Meet Magnus Heldin, research engineer here at APR Technologies! With a focus on developing new solutions for demanding space applications, Magnus plays a key role in designing, testing, and evaluating innovative products.
Hi Magnus! Tell us a little about yourself and your background.
– I have a degree in Materials Engineering from Uppsala University, and I have worked as a research engineer here at APR Technologies since 2020. After my degree, which I obtained in 2012, I did research on friction and abrasion, also at Uppsala University. I completed my dissertation there in 2019.
Describe your field and role at APR Technologies. What are your main duties?
– As a research engineer at our space section, I develop new solutions for demanding applications in space. Our unique cooling solutions allow us to offer products with long service-free lifetimes, which makes them optimal for use in demanding environments and in hard-to-reach places, for example in satellites in space. – My work includes developing product functionality to meet the customer’s requirements and specifications, and being involved in the design, testing and evaluation of new products.
There’s a lot going on in the space industry at the moment, are you seeing any specific trends in your field right now? What are some developments that you foresee in the coming years?
– Yes, the space industry is growing rapidly and as a result of today’s technological progress, there’s a trend in which customers want to use components with higher power density, which generate more heat that needs to be managed. We have also seen a greater demand for active systems, which enable customers to control when the actual cooling takes place. All this so that their products can handle, for example, new applications in satellites or novel environments.
