APR Technologies AB has recently signed a new agreement with the European Space Agency (ESA) to advance development of a thermal switch component for space applications. The project began in late 2023 and is scheduled to run for 14 months.

The initiative aims to refine a thermal switch’s design and validate critical functionalities ahead of an upcoming qualification activity. The project involves delta development for key components, introducing new elements in the thermal switch design, implementing a design update, and conducting prototype tests to confirm the critical functions of the updated thermal switch design.

The use of thermal switches demonstrates significant potential for the space industry, offering unique performance and simplicity in the market. Recognized early on by a leading space systems contractor in Europe, the initial development has focused on integrating the thermal switch into a satellite platform.

Completion of delta development and qualification activities is crucial before the thermal switch is ready for wider commercial exploitation and integration into satellite platforms. The primary contractor, actively involved in previous thermal switch developments, remains committed to qualifying this thermal switch. They have allocated internal resources to continue their involvement in the collaboration and development process.

This project marks a significant step forward in enhancing the capabilities of thermal switches, emphasizing its strategic importance in the broader field of space technology.
